This residence in the mountains of Big Sky, MT, proved to be a challenging project structurally. The combination of the high snow loads, large roof cantilevers, flat “green roof”, and coordination of architectural elements needed special attention throughout the design process. The upper roofs consists of LVL rafters supported by cantilevered steel beams. The lower roofs were designed to support a flat “green roof”. In order to support the snow load and extra dead load of the soil, a concrete over metal deck supported by steel joists roof system was used. The lateral system consists of a combination of wood framed shear walls and moment frames at the large windows facing south. Another complicating factor on this project was the slope of the site. This required the utilization and design of some tall basement and retaining walls.
